THE ART OF MARWAR
Original Marwar miniature paintings created by a family of artists in the Blue City — where courtly traditions, luminous colour and extraordinary detail meet the hands of artists today.
THE BLUE CITY · THE MARWAR TRADITION · THE FAMILY WORKSHOP
In Marwar, miniature painting was never taught in a classroom. It was taught at home — a grandfather guiding a child's hand over a half-finished elephant procession, a mother grinding lapis into the exact blue of these city walls. Our family has kept that unbroken thread for many generations, and it is still how we learn today.
Our family's earliest painters worked for the old courts of Marwar, illustrating manuscripts and court scenes on hand-made wasli paper — the discipline our style still carries.
Through the generations that followed, the craft moved from royal commissions into the family home — taught quietly, evening after evening, to whichever child showed the patience for it.
Today our family and the artist friends we've grown up beside paint full-time from Jodhpur — some on canvas for collectors abroad, some still on paper in the old court style, all from the same well of technique.
A note from the gallery
I'm currently studying fine arts, and working as a miniature artist here in Jodhpur — the same city, the same style, that my family has painted in for generations before me.
Alongside my own painting, I run our family art gallery, where I bring together work from my family and from the artist friends I've grown up around, so that all of us have a real place to show and sell what we make — not just me.
If you're visiting Jodhpur, I'd love for you to come see where these paintings are actually made — the pigments, the brushes, the half-finished pieces on the table — and to meet the people who paint them.
